TWO Gwent AMs have met Network Rail and Arriva Trains Wales representatives to discuss plans for upcoming work on the Ebbw Vale rail link.

AMs Jayne Bryant and Rhianon Passmore were keen to stress how the extra capacity would permit a ‘crucial service’ between Ebbw Vale and Newport.

They met with the two companies in Newbridge to discuss the proposed plans, which is set to increase the capacity on the current train line.

Currently operating a single service hourly, the service is set to be increased to two trains an hour, both with six carriages, on an extended two-track line.

This AMs were keen to stress how the extra capacity would permit a ‘crucial service’ between Ebbw Vale and Newport.

Newport West AM Jayne Bryant said: “Newport is the busiest train station in Wales outside of Cardiff. There is huge demand for this kind of service connecting our city to the line and making it a vital hub for South East Wales. It would be an important step forward and deliver an economic boost to the region.”

Sam Hadley, public affairs manager for Network Rail Wales, said: “The Ebbw Vale line is a great success story – it’s now a key commuter route. Network Rail is working collaboratively with the Welsh Government to explore options to further enhance the Ebbw Vale line and increase capacity in the future.”
