NEW research has revealed that two fifths of British people still own tech items and gadgets that are deemed ‘old school’ or ‘vintage’.

The poll also found the vintage tech hot spots of the UK, with those living in Wales favouring PlayStation 1s.

Analogue radios, PlayStation 1s, VHS players and games consoles are among the vintage technology that British people are still holding on to, whether for nostalgia reasons or in the hope of selling it on for a profit down the line.

We've also reported today that there are 20 current licences for black and white televisions in Newport

The research was carried out by money-saving website www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk as part of an ongoing study into British attitudes towards technology.

The survey quizzed 2,490 people aged 18 and over about how they felt technology had advanced over the years and what ‘old school’ technology items they still owned.

Initially all respondents were asked if they owned any technology that would be deemed ‘old school’ or ‘vintage’ and told to take into account anything that was over 10-years-old and wasn’t still a popular item to purchase and use.

Out of those questioned 43% stated that ‘yes’ they do, whilst the remaining respondents were either ‘unsure’ if anything may be in the loft (30%) or ‘no’ they didn’t own anything of the sort (27%).

Those who stated ‘yes’ they owned old technology items and gadgets were asked why it was they were holding onto these; 53% stated it was for ‘nostalgia’ reasons, 38% said they hoped to sell it one day for money and the remaining 9% said they preferred their old gadgets to the newer versions and replacements.

All respondents were asked what ‘old school’ or ‘vintage’ tech items or gadgets they still owned.

When provided with a list of possible items and told to select all that applied, as well as what region they were from in order to determine any regional patterns, the results were as follows:

1.    North East – Analog radio (21%) (owned this item)
2.    Wales – PlayStation 1 (PS1) (17%)
3.    London – Analog radio (15%)
4.    South West – VHS player (14%)
5.    Yorkshire & the Humberside – Nintendo 64 (14%)
6.    North West – Sega Megadrive (12%)
7.    East of England – Atari 2600 (11%)
8.    Scotland – Cassette player (10%)
9.    South East – VHS player (8%)
10.    East Midlands – CD Walkman (8%)
11.    Northern Ireland – Retro TV set (5%)
12.    West Midlands – VHS player (5%)

According to the poll, all of those who stated that they still owned a games console were asked how often they played with them. The majority of respondents, 54%, stated that they only use them ‘a few times a year’, whilst others play with them ‘on a regular basis’ (26%) or ‘rarely/never’ (20%). Furthermore, two fifths of respondents who stated that they still own a VHS player admitted that they don’t own any VHS tapes in order to use the VHS player.

George Charles of VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, said: “Old gadgets are great fun to play around with and certainly remind many of us our childhoods. With the recent boom in record players, vintage tech has never been more popular. Even though they probably don’t function as well as they used to, and newer versions offer more functions and are generally better quality, sometimes nothing can beat going old school and reliving your youth.”
