AN INQUEST has been opened into the death of a 24-year-old lumberjack who died in Cwmfelinfach last week.

Senior coroner for Gwent David Bowen was told that Caerphilly-born Ben Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene - an area of forestry at Pont Lawrence Rees Lane - by a paramedic.

Emergency services had been called to the scene at around 3pm last Tuesday, August 15, by a member of the public.

The provisional findings of a post mortem examination - carried out last Friday - show the cause of Mr Thomas’ death to have been crush asphyxia and lung damage.

He had also suffered fractured ribs and blunt trauma injuries as a result of a falling tree.

Gwent Police and the Health and Safety Executive are continuing their investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mr Thomas’ death.

Mr Bowen adjourned the inquest for three months, while those enquiries are completed.
