Autistic man is a degree above the rest

MOST 21-year-olds would be thrilled to bits with a gaining a first in a chemistry degree, but for James Pritchard from Risca, the result is extra special.

James has Apspergers Syndrome, a form of autism that affects his behaviour, as he explains: "I find it difficult to form relationships with people, and I am quite introverted," he said.

Although university could be tough for a young man with his condition, James harnessed his Aspergers to apply himself to his studies.

As well as tackling a tricky chemistry degree and passing with flying colours, the former Cross Keys College pupil lists maths puzzles and reading up on physics as his hobbies.

James graduated from Cardiff University earlier this month, and is now plotting his next move.

"I'm going to take a gap year. I've got some family in Australia and I'm thinking of perhaps going over there."

James is planning on gaining some work in the pharmaceutical business before he decides whether to take on postgraduate study in 2009.

Whatever James decides, he knows he has the full support of his family.

"I'm so proud of what he has done," his father Chris Pritchard said.

"It has been a long journey for James but through sher determination and hard work he has managed to achieve his goal," he said.
