A NEWBRIDGE man is on trial accused of stabbing two men after a row over stolen jackets.
The jury at Newport crown court heard yesterday how Jonathan Wannell allegedly stabbed Darren Parker in the chest then chased Dean Scriven and stuck a knife in his back.
The 24-year-old, of Glashon Court, Pantside, admits wounding Mr Scriven unlawfully but denies he intended to cause him grievous bodily harm.
He denies three counts of unlawfully wounding Mr Parker and claims Scriven also had a knife and caused the wound.
Ieuan Bennett, prosecuting, told the jury the three men were at a friend's party on the Pantside estate in the early hours of December 20 last year when Wannell had an argument with a girl and left the house.
Mr Bennett said Wannell appeared to have had stolen two jackets belonging to two of the guests and a group of six went to get them back.
The court heard they found Wannell at a nearby house and were jeering and shouting abuse at him from outside.
Mr Bennett said Wannell emerged from the house holding a knife covered in a towel and ran towards Mr Parker and stabbed him in the chest.
He said Mr Scriven threw a child’s toy truck at Wannell to distract him before running off, but Wannell chased him.
He was then stabbed in the back with such force that the knife’s handle broke off.
Mr Parker, 20, told the jury he initially thought he had been punched then felt blood dripping down his stomach.
He said: “I lifted my top off and said ‘I think I’ve been stabbed’, then I took it off and there was a big gash.”
Mr Parker said he did not see Wannell stab him or the knife he was allegedly holding, but was drowsy and "out of it" after being wounded.
Proceeding.
