MONMOUTH Choral Society is marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a celebration concert on Saturday, June 9 The choir has an extra reason to celebrate as its musical director, Huw Williams, has been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, in recognition of his role as suborganist at the Chapel Royal.
Mr Williams has played or directed at many events attended by the Queen and other royals, both at the Chapel Royal and while he was suborganist at St Paul’s Cathedral.
He has been introduced to the Queen on two occasions, and will be playing the organ when the Chapel Royal takes part in the Diamond Jubilee service to be broadcast fromSt Paul’s on Tuesday, June 5.
Most of the pieces in the Monmouth concert were first heard at important royal occasions.
Among them is John Rutter’s Psalm 150 – O praise the Lord, commissioned by St Paul’s Cathedral for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.
Mr Williams was the organist at the first performance, broadcast live around the world.
The concert takes place at St Mary’s Priory Church, Monmouth, at 7.30pm on Saturday, June 9.
