FIFTY years serving shoppers in the Valleys is not enough for one dedicated worker, who refuses to retire.

Anthony Owen has reached the age of 65 but is still committed to his petrol station job in Pontllanfraith.

The part-time cashier has worked at a number of Gwent supermarkets over the years and still takes great pleasure in providing good customer service in his current role at Sainsbury’s.

On Wednesday, his colleagues held a surprise party for him to celebrate his career, which began at the age of 15 in 1962.

“I must have enjoyed it to stay here 50 years. It would be strange to retire,” he said.

PR ambassador for the Pontllanfraith store Linda Korczynski said staff share the same opinion of Mr Owen.

“He’s a really nice guy and good to have around,”

she said.
