Nelson group fight for community facility

The Nelson Development Trust outside the Boys & Girls Club in Nelson
A GROUP of dedicated volunteers are fighting to keep a facility available for the community of Nelson.
The Nelson Development Trust have been given two years by Caerphilly Borough Council's cabinet to prove that they can make the Nelson Boys & Girls Club site next to Nelson Community Centre financially viable.
The facility has not been used since 2005.Trust member and Nelson Community Councillor, Ann Gray said: "We are very disappointed that we didn't get three years to save the facility for the community.
"The Trust has ambitions to develop the site to enhance youth provision within the village and they say that this is the last piece of community land, which could be used for such a facility.
The Trust has been quoted a figure of £10,000 for urgent repairs to the building, which would mean the facility can be brought back into use.
The site was earmarked for development by the borough council in August 2011.
This would have meant a capital receipt. If after the two years the Trust does not prove that their business plan is viable, the land will revert back to the council.
However if the Trust can prove that their plans are viable the group have the possibility of signing a 25 year lease on the building.
