THE consultation period for the merging of Glamorgan, Newport and Cardiff Metropolitan universities is to be extended, Wales education minister Leighton Andrews announced.

It has been revealed that Cardiff Metropolitan has asked the Mr Andrews to release the evidence he used when planning the reconfiguration of higher education in Wales.

He said this will be done as quickly as possible.

A Cardiff Metropolitan University spokesman said: “Without evidence, it is impossible for the University’s governors to make an informed decision on proposals which will affect staff and students for years to come.”

The consultation has now been extended by 12 weeks from the date on which the information is provided.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales Central, Eluned Parrott, commented: “The Minister has announced that he will make this information available as soon as possible, but no release date is given. I find this bizarre - either the minister has the information at hand or he doesn’t.

“Unless his department is a complete shambles, he should be able release this information straight away.”
