Caerphilly MP to give talk at historical society conference
3:52pm Wednesday 17th October 2012 in News
CAERPHILLY MP Wayne David will be giving a talk about one of his predecessors Morgan Jones at a conference being held by Gelligaer Historical Society.
Mr David will give his talk from Conscientious Objector to Member of Parliament, this Saturday October 20, at 2.05pm at Llancaiach Fawr.
He said: "Morgan Jones was a great Labour MP. During the First World War he was a Conscientious Objector and in 1921 he became the first Conscientious Objector to be elected as a Labour Member of Parliament.
The by-election in which he was elected in 1921 was important because it was the first election contested by the Communist Party, as well as it being highly-charged because of the high level of unemployment.
"Caerphilly has a park named after Morgan Jones, but his name should be better known than what it is.
My talk will focus on the early part of Morgan Jones’ life; his career as a Labour MP and a junior Education Minister in two Labour governments will be the subject of another talk."
