VOLUNTEERS for St John’s Ambulance in Risca were left devastated after vandals caused around £2,000 worth of damage to their hall just three months after it was refurbished.
Cadet Officer and hall caretaker, Jamie Arr, 21, contacted police yesterday after a member of the organisation noticed large holes in the roof caused by the removal of lead flashing.
Mr Arr, of Risca, said he believed the damage was caused sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning.
The hall is used by a number of community groups such as Cadets, Badgers and a faith healing group who all helped raise money for the refurbishment of the hall on Tredegar Terrace.
Around £32,000 of work was completed in October last year including a new roof, windows and kitchen after the group received a £30,000 grant from the Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO), which Mr Arr says now feels like a waste. He said: “We are just really annoyed and disappointed that this has happened so soon after the work was completed.”
Builders secured the hall last night but the damage is expected to cost around 2,000 to repair.
A spokesman for Gwent Police said they were investigating the incident.
