Two members of staff from Newport-based Monmouthshire Building Society are all set to take part in the London Marathon later this month.

The London Marathon is one of Britain’s greatest sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course covers a gruelling 26 miles and 385 yards, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall.

Tom James and Craig Lewis will join the tens of thousands of runners from across the world, including Mo Farah, for their first marathon together on Sunday April 13.

Tom, management accountant, has completed more than 1,000km since April last year in preparation for the event.

He is running on behalf of Prostate Cancer UK in memory of his uncle who passed away after a courageous fight with the disease.

Tom said: “After taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon and beating my own personal best, I decided to challenge myself and take on the London Marathon.

“Training hasn’t come without its injuries but I’m confident that I will do well on the day and I’m grateful to everyone who has helped me reach my sponsorship target of over £2,000.”

Craig, marketing assistant, is a keen runner and has been preparing for the event over the past few months with the hope of adding the London Marathon to his list of sporting achievements. He is running on behalf of Tenovus, the leading cancer charity in Wales.

Craig said: “I’m very excited to be taking part in the London Marathon and feel honoured to be able to raise funds for a charity I feel extremely passionate about. Tenovus work in the heart of the community, providing treatment, advice and support and I’m grateful for the generous donations I’ve received so far.”
