Is Newport ready to ride the wave of the next economic recovery?

The city certainly seems well positioned to attract inward investment.

We have recently experienced growing interest from investors both regional and national looking to invest in the city. Investors recognise that the potential returns on their investment and developments are greater here in the city of Newport that they may be in some other areas.

Recently demand across all commercial sectors has seen a marked increase. This has been from both leasehold and freehold occupiers as well as investors.

The Admiral workforce has added a much-needed additional vibrancy to the city both in its pubs and cafes and also on the high street and with that workforce set to increase markedly over the next few months, it will bring its own economy to the city.

Enquiries from the manufacturing industry have also increased and this is encouraging as Newport is well-placed with its historic manufacturing base taking a knock during the economic downturn.

The Queensberry development gathers momentum with the steelwork rising from the ground and giving everyone confidence that this is not another false dawn in the history of retail schemes in the city.

Clients and general investors seem enthused by what is happening in the city and the surrounding area and this can only grow confidence. I was in the city with a major national occupier recently and they commented on how the centre seemed 'more alive' and generally busier. Hopefully after their visit to Newport they will now spread the word.

I’m reliably informed that the final phase of the City Vizion scheme will be starting soon and with all the first phase sold or under offer this also shows a confidence in the city as a place to live, which in itself adds to the economic growth, with more people living and working in the city.

It is now time for those of us who have battled through the hard years to continue to promote Newport as a city to invest in and now more than ever the good news stories and tangible changes to the city will help us all help Newport thrive and establish itself once again as a major force in attracting investments and job creation.
