A ‘green’ fundraising relay using non-motorised transport has raised more than £8,100, for St David’s Hospice Care.

Staff and clients from Kier Western & Wales used every imaginable form of transport to make their journey which linked up each Kier building site and offices from Cornwall to South Wales.

They started with Lands End and then kayaked, roller bladed, swam a mile at sea, used wheelbarrows, stilts, toboggans, zip wires, skis and pedalos as well as walking, running and cycling. At each stage they handed the baton on to the next team as the journey made its way up to Gwent.

The event headed towards the final crescendo of the journey where in just one day the teams crossed the Severn Bridge on bicycles before visiting building sites at Usk Prison, Pontypool Canal Basin, St Anne's Hospice and St David’s Hospice, in Malpas, Newport and finally Kier’s offices at Cathedral Chambers, Stow Hill.

The journey carried on to Cardiff and up into the South Wales Valleys before heading west to Neath and Swansea then back through Porthcawl, paddle boarding across Swansea Bay.

Emma Saysell, chief executive of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “Kier really went the extra mile in the fantastic challenges that they set themselves. We are thrilled and extremely grateful that the money raised as a result of the efforts of Keir and its employees here in South Wales will be donated to St David’s Hospice Care.”

Kier managing director Anthony Irving said: "We really enjoyed taking part in this 500-mile. We had a tremendous response from staff. I am delighted that we were able to raise the fantastic sum of £8,133.94p to donate to St David’s Hospice Care.”
