Paul Carney, an engineering manager for Atkins Rail Engineering Projects on the Cardiff re-signalling scheme, has won this year’s Signalling and Telecommunications Person of the Year Award.

Paul, who is based in Newport, said: "It is an honour to be recognised for work done, but I’m just the conductor of a very good orchestra."

Atkins' Shelly Jones said: "Through hard work and determination, Paul has managed to pull the various facets of the scheme successfully together and deliver a reliable and safe migration from what was very old signalling infrastructure to a modern state-of-the-art system.

"Working with manufacturers who provided technical input to the solutions, Paul worked with the design, construct, telecoms, systems and test teams to ensure the solution was engineered correctly for the scheme.”

The Signalling and Telecommunications Person of the Year Award is sponsored by Westermo.

The RailStaff Awards, which is supported by Network Rail and the Rail Alliance, is an annual industry event recognising the hard work, courage and professionalism of the men and women who deliver Britain’s railway every day.

Now in its eighth year, the circus-themed 2014 event was held at Coventry's Ricoh Arena.
