Rhys Morton, managing director of Newport-based Whitehead Building Services.

1: How did you get into your current job?

Since leaving school to pursue a career in the construction sector I soon realised my ambition to one day run a business.

Whitehead Building Services has been a Newport-based building services contracting business since 1978. It was acquired by our family in 2003 with the intention to expand and develop the business from a turnover of £3m to £30m by 2015.

2: What’s the best bit?

Construction presents a very unique challenge in that we seldom get the opportunity to build the same thing twice, so in that sense we have to get it right the first time.

It is enjoyable and rewarding seeing a completed project knowing you had the right team to deliver it and a happy client at the end! There are always challenges along the way but its how we deal with them that makes us different. It is also particularly rewarding to see our apprentices develop into qualified tradesman and the future generation of our industry.

3: What was your first Saturday job?

Growing up I spent most of my time in a swimming pool training mornings and evenings and competing most weekends, so prevented any opportunity to work when I wasn’t in school. I did have a few attempts at paper rounds but couldn’t balance the time.

4: Describe your ideal job?

I am sure that I am not alone when saying this is quite a difficult question to answer and is very thought provoking. Having reflected on this, while there are many professions that interest me I have been lucky to work with some interesting, charismatic and inspiring people and for that reason I would say that I am in my ideal job.

5: What motivates you?

If I was being honest, I have always been a competitive nature in everything I’ve done and I would have to say it’s wanting to be the best at what we do coupled with the fear of getting it wrong that motivates me.

6: And what irritates you?

Large and unnecessary pot-holes in the road which damage the wheels on my bike!

7: Who do you most admire in business and why?

Anyone who has started a business from scratch and made a success of it gets my vote… It says a lot about that person. If I had to say someone I’d have to put Sir Terry Matthews up there.

8: What was the last book you read and what did you think?

Wide-Eyed and Legless - a book which tells the story of the 1987 ANC- Halfords Team, the first British team to tackle the Tour De France in 20 years.

9: What do you do to relax?

I have always had a love for all sports but at the moment my bike is my escape

10: What dreams are you still fulfil?

And it is a dream… I have taken part in a few triathlons but would love to complete an ironman - lots of work to do first

11: What was the last film you saw at the cinema and what did you think?

The last film I saw was The Theory of Everything which is biopic of the life of Professor Stephen Hawking, which was inspirational

12: Favourite food and place to eat it?

At the moment its sushi gets my vote although I do enjoy a burger and a pint of real ale at the Urban Tap House

13: What car do you drive?

BMW 5 series

14: What’s in your car’s CD player at the moment?

BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge

15: What’s your favourite TV programme past or present?

Having three children who have lots of activities there isn’t much time for TV although I did really enjoy watching new series - Marco Polo.

16: Do you tweet?

Yes, although this is a very recent affair and follow more than I tweet. I'm @rhysmorton74

17: If you were an animal, what would you be?

A tiger, apparently. I had no idea so used the internet and found a site that asked a series of questions and gave me that answer!

18: Proudest moment.

I am extremely proud of the progress made by Whitehead over the last decade and the personal development of each and every member of our team. However, as a parent moment comes from the achievements of my children

19: And most embarrassing?

Oh, there are plenty, most of which I couldn’t say. Recently we renewed the contact for our company mobiles and I had made a bit of a fuss about looking after them, only to drop mine down the toilet within the first week!

20: What advice would you give to someone wanting to be successful in your line of work?

Always do what you say you will do. Work hard and be nice to people and don’t let anyone tell you can’t!
