A Newbridge electronics manufacturer has opened its doors to two local primary schools in an effort to inspire the next generation of bright Welsh minds.

Pupils from Abercarn Primary School and Crumlin Primary School were given the chance to discover the hi-tech world of electronics at Axiom Manufacturing Services’ state-of-the-art facility, and learn how paying attention in their science lessons could one day lead to exciting careers in technology.

The youngsters were given a guided tour by Axiom apprentices, who provided live demonstrations of how the company’s multimillion pound equipment creates and assembles circuit boards for an array of complex devices and industries.

Axiom is recognised as one of the UK’s foremost providers of contract electronic manufacturer services across the Aerospace, Defence, Medical, security and Industrial sectors.

In addition to school visits and work experience placements, Axiom is committed to inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in Wales’ growing hi-tech industries, working in partnership with Welsh colleges and universities to provide sought-after graduate and apprenticeship training schemes.

Deputy head at Crumlin Primary School Sharon Knight said: “The visit to Axiom was an exciting opportunity for our pupils and a thoroughly engaging insight into the world of work.

“It provided valuable experience to build upon their science learning – putting electricity and electronics into an everyday context. We’ve already had students express an interest in working in at a place like Axiom as a result.”

A learner at Crumlin, 11-year-old Nahum, said: “It was a really good, hands-on experience, and it was great to see how everything was made.”

Axiom recently announced its sixth year of sustained growth, which has resulted in record turnover of more than £40 million.

David Davies, managing director at Axiom, said: “It is important to show Welsh youngsters that there are exciting opportunities to work in high-technology industries right here on their doorstep.

“We hope that all learners who visit us leave with a sparked interest in manufacturing and a sense of how committed we are to nurturing young talent. It was a pleasure and a privilege to welcome both Abercarn and Crumlin to Axiom.”
