A donation of £12,600 from a scholarship fund established in memory of lifelong Gwent health supporter Trevor Gray will be used to create a e-Learning centre to support end-of-life care training for hospice nurses.

The Trevor Gray Scholarship Fund will assist with the delivery of educational courses in conjunction with Gwent-based end-of-life charity St David’s Hospice Care.

Trevor Gray, JP, MBE, who died aged 66 in 1985, was company secretary of the Gwent Hospitals Contributory Fund for 36 years and a lay board member for Wales for the General Medical Council.

The scholarship strengthens links between the Aneurin Bevan Health Board, St David’s Hospice Care and Plutus Health, formerly Gwent Hospitals Contributory Fund.

The latest donation, of £12,600, will be used to assist St David’s Hospice Care education centre, The Trevor Gray Education Centre and purchase lap top computers to deliver e-learning for hospice nurses.

The centre, which is used for training, meetings, external courses and seminars, is at Withey Court, Ty Coch Way, Cwmbran.

Martin Ricketts, CEO of Newport-based Plutus Health, said: “We’re so pleased that the money raised in the memory of Trevor Gray has found a positive use once again.

“The money we’re donating will assist with training nurses in palliative care, something our business has always aimed to support wherever possible.

“St David’s works tirelessly to provide care for seriously ill people across Newport, so it’s hugely rewarding to see fundraising monies, which are managed through Plutus Health, put to such great use.”

Emma Saysell, chief executive of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “The support we have from The Trevor Gray Scholarship is something for which we are enormously grateful. The latest, significant donation of £12,600 is very welcome as it will help us to buy six new laptops fully set up for e-learning and also to pay for a series of courses which are so vital for the training of our nurses.”

Emma said the money will be used to help set up a bespoke e-learning suite at the Trevor Gray Education Centre.

She said: “With our ongoing commitment to train our professionals we run a series of study days and courses from mandatory training through to degree and masters level education. The costs to St David’s Hospice Care of running the necessary courses or sending staff on courses are ever increasing and we only receive 25 per cent of our funding from the NHS.

“St David’s Hospice Care has had a very long and successful relationship with The Trevor Gray Foundation and the Gray family. This relationship had enabled the hospice sector to share their expertise with the NHS over several decades through the Trevor Gray Scholarship; the impact of this cannot be underestimated.”
