Newport students nominated by Newport City Homes have been given the opportunity to take advantage of a unique work placement scheme with law firm Blake Morgan.

Now in its third year, Growing Ambitions gives young people nominated by local social housing associations the chance to spend a week with Blake Morgan, gaining vital work experience and learning more about the world of business that will enhance their prospects of employment at a later date.

Mentored by trainee solicitors, the programme includes the opportunity to spend 'a day in the life of' a lawyer, attending Court, taking part in workshops to learn skills such as negotiation and presentation and time with human resources professionals who give tips on interview techniques and completing applications forms.

Curtis DaDa and Georgia Phasey, both 16, pupils at St Josephs RC High School said the experience has been of great benefit.

Curtis said: “I will be studying A levels in maths, chemistry, English and history. I then hope to study law at Cambridge University. Having the opportunity to spend a week with solicitors at Blake Morgan has been a fantastic experience enabling me to really think about my future career. I’m sure the week will stand me in good stead when considering future career options.”

Joanna Rees, a partner with Blake Morgan, said: “Social mobility in the UK continues to lag behind other nations and while recent records indicate that youth unemployment is falling, young people continue to face increasing difficulties to get on to the employment ladder. As a firm we consider that we must work together to support our young people and grow ambitions.”

Mererid McDaid, associate with Blake Morgan who is responsible for the co-ordinating the scheme, said: “ We are extremely pleased that we are able to work in partnership with our social housing clients to offer young people aged 15-16 meaningful work experience. Since its inception, interest in the scheme has grown and we are delighted that Growing Ambitions provides an interesting and motivating experience for young people.”

Tim Monkton, academy co-ordinator at Newport City Homes, said: “We are committed to providing learning and employment opportunities to unemployed people living in Newport and assisted in identifying suitable people to participate. We are proud to play a role in the Growing Ambitions scheme and be part of its success.”
