ONE of the city of Newport’s grand historic houses is up for sale at auction.

Imposing Rothbury House, a detached 19th century property, once a majestic private home and latterly a nursing home until it closed five years ago, is for sale through Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions.

The guide price for the Jacobean style property, located in Stow Park Circle and which has planning permission for conversion into apartments, is £225,000.

The double bay-fronted, grade II listed house, built in about 1880, has a impressive collection of rooms arranged over three floors together with two accesses with the principal driveway leading to a main parking area and a detached coach houses and gardens.

Paul Fosh, owner of Paul Fosh Auctions, said: “This is a truly magnificent house in Stow Park Circle, one of the city of Newport’s most prestigious addresses. Although the property has been empty for some time it does retain many original fixtures and fittings include panel doors, architrave and, in particular, a large, particularly interesting stained glass window to the rear of the property featuring a knight resplendent in full armour.

“Situated to the west of the city of Newport there is easy access to the M4 at Junction 27 of High Cross. The property stands in good sized gardens and grounds lying in the main to the front of the building with a pair of coach houses and enclosed areas to the rear.”

Planning permission, which was granted in March last year, would allow for the conversion of the former nursing home to a total of seven residential units made up of two three-bedroom apartments and also two one-bedroom apartments in the main house and the conversion to residential of the two coach houses.

Mr Fosh said The Rothbury could also be returned to an impressive single home.
