Time passes so quickly the older I get and on Friday we held our annual IoD Christmas lunch, although it hardly seems any time at all since last year’s celebrations.

Our entertainment was provided by conductor Tim Rhys-Evans and the boys from Only Men Aloud, who, once again, were absolutely superb with their selection of Christmas songs.

I have enjoyed several good days recently.

I was very impressed with the recent UK Investment Summit held jointly by the Welsh and UK Governments at Newport’s ever-impressive Celtic Manor Resort.

It was a terrific showcase for Newport and for Welsh business, with entrepreneurs and Welsh businesses including Renishaw plc, Airbus, Sure Chill and Concrete Canvas Ltd all present.

As well as the opportunity to mingle with potential inward investors, the event brought together the Welsh business community. I was very impressed with what I saw there. What was even more refreshing was the Welsh Government and UK Government working in partnership for the benefit of Welsh businesses and the wider Welsh economy.

The assembled audiences had the opportunity of hearing first hand some of the solid work that is flourishing here in Wales. Although I could list the many fantastic things from the day, I was particularly impressed with the presentation from Airbus and the video of what future flying will be like. It was just breath taking.

In the foyer, there were exhibitions showing some amazingly innovative products and it was a privilege to be part of such a positive and upbeat convention.

The First Minister, Welsh Secretary and Prime Minister were all in attendance and gave upbeat and positive speeches. I left the event feeling buoyed and buzzing at the potential we have here in Wales.

We have much to be proud of and to celebrate as the year draws to a close. I wish you all and your families a very Happy Christmas.
