Last week saw the third National Women in Engineering Day which focuses attention on the opportunities available to women and the valuable contributions they make within this sector.

South Wales employer Western Power Distribution employs more than 6,000 staff, predominantly engineers and it is encouraging more females to join the ranks.

WPD is the electricity distribution network operator in the region and is responsible for looking after the electricity cables, wires, substations and pylons that deliver electricity to homes and businesses.

Network Strategy Engineer Danielle Greedy, from Newport, is just one of the female engineers currently working for the company.

Danielle works for the Network Strategy and Innovation team based in Bristol.

This team focus on identifying the long term strategic development of the network.

When asked about her time at WPD and her opinions on women in engineering, Danielle said: “I have worked in the industry for three years and am now part of a team that look at the long term strategic development of the distribution network.

“Every day is different and involves identifying solutions to any potential issues, so it gives me the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the business. It takes a lot of team work and problem solving, so a passion for maths and science is a must! I love meeting new people and get to do this on a daily basis. I would definitely recommend a career in engineering to women.”
