Jason Burnett is on a mission - to help people in Gwent and South Wales look after themselves.

With 20 years experience in the world of personal security and safety, Jason has launched a business operating in Newport, Cardiff and other parts of South Wales to give people the skills to keep safe through martial arts and fitness training.

Masters Academy Cardiff was launched earlier this year at unit 6 Cardiff Bay Business Centre after a £20,000 refit. Jason and his trainers teach adults and children to respond to threats and deal with difficult situations.

In particular, young people benefit from this type of training, he says.

He said: “We train a lot of youngsters, building up their confidence and helping them deal with bullying. We want them to be independent and look after themselves as much as possible.”

Masters Academy Cardiff also sells high-tech safety gear for youngsters, including the Aspis8. This is a Children’s Smart Locator Watch, ensuring children can always keep in touch with their families and with an SOS button.

The firm also runs special self-defence programmes for women, which are proving very popular.

He finds the location of the Cardiff Bay Business Centre, run by Tata Steel subsidiary UK Steel Enterprise, perfect for the business.

He said: “It is excellent for our purposes. We have around 200 customers coming here during the week.

“The support we have received from UK Steel Enterprise as our landlords has been great.”

Andrea Hewett, of UK Steel Enterprise, said: "We have a wide range of business at CBBC, and we were delighted when the academy took space, and very pleased to accommodate their requirements.

“There is obviously strong demand for their services, and we hope they will continue grow and prosper.”

As well as running the business in Cardiff, Jason works around the world keeping hotels and corporate clients safe in troubled locations. He offers close protection for clients and advises in safety systems.

A full physiotherapy service is also offered at Masters Academy Cardiff by Dan Cleal. Dan has worked with performance athletes, including top ski-cross champion Emily Sarsfield.

“The physio business complements the other business very well,” said Dan. “The aim is to keep the body tuned and in the best possible condition at all times.”
