25 years of Cancercareline

THIS year Cancercareline celebrates its 25th year of providing support to anyone affected by cancer -patients, carers, family and friends- living within the County Borough of Caerphilly.

The charity was founded in 1985 by the late Mrs Eva Reed and was originally known as 'Cancerlink'.

The charity started in a small portacabin behind Wesley Hall Methodist Church. They moved to their present location on 15 Woodbine Road, Blackwood, around seven years ago.

The charity has provided support to well over 4,000 people over the years and provides services such as 24 hour Staffed Helpline, Counselling Service, Benefits Advice, Support Groups, Complementary Therapies and Beauty Treatments and Internet Cafe.

President of Cancercareline MP for Islywn Don Touhig, said: "The success of this small charity can only be attributed to the support given by a wealth of volunteers who have given many hours of hard work and dedication to helping others over its 25 years.

As well as support from Caerphilly County Borough Council, the Local Health Board, GAVO and local businesses as a small charity Cancercareline relies heavily on donations and fundraising activities. 100% of all monies raised is used to benefit our clients, every £1 raised in the community is spent in the community!

"One of our key fundraising projects is the Cancercareline Pantomime, not only does this raise much needed funds but it also brings together groups of all ages from 5yrs - 75 years young who may in some way be affected by cancer." In its sixth year, this year's production is Mother Goose, being performed at Blackwood Little Theatre over this February half term break.

This year to coincide with the anniversary which is also Eastenders 25th year, the Producer of the show has kindly given the group permission to use the theme tune so they can have their own 'duf, duf, duf'. The show opens to the Eastenders theme tune. With a cast and production team of over 50 the first two shows were at Markham Miners Welfare Hall last weekend.

"They received very positive feedback from the audiences attending. And one audience member commented Comments: "Excellent value for money and a great opportunity to see a live performance on our door step!"
