A BLACKWOOD man with a keen interest in white supremacism was found guilty of racially aggravated wounding after he attacked an Asian man with a glass bottle.

Richard Harris, 38, of Pritchard Terrace, hit Zahoor Hussain with the glass bottle at the Mornington Lodge pub in the town last July.

Mr Hussain said he has since suffered from hearing problems after the incident left him with lacerations to his left ear and neck.

Recorder Jonathan Ferris told Harris a prison sentence is inevitable when he is sentenced at Newport Crown Court on January 12 after a jury found him guilty of the charge.

Harris was found not guilty of a charge of wounding with intent.

He was released on bail on the conditions that he resides at his home, that he does not contact prosecution witnesses and that he does not go to the Mornington Lodge.

During his trial, the court had heard that Harris had denied being a racist but admitted being a member of the “white pride” British Movement which concerns itself with the “purity of the white race”.

Harris had also said there “needs to be more research done” into whether the Holocaust took place and told the jury: “Hitler’s views are common sense on a lot of things”.

The court had earlier heard Harris had decorated his living room with pictures of Hitler; had songs on his phone with lyrics such as: “We have got to love this land of ours and fight to keep it white”; and had tattoos of swastikas. He said they were not in reference to Nazism but religious symbols instead.

The jury were told the fight had happened when Harris told white colleagues of Mr Hussain that they were stupid to be in the company of Asian people.

Harris accepted he had hit Mr Hussain with a glass bottle but said he could not remember how it happened.
