TWO half-brothers who stabbed their neighbour in a “horrific and horrendous” attack at his home in Risca will be sentenced today.

Raymond Ball, 33, of Twmbarlwm Close, Risca and Gavin Harris, 28, of Holly Road, Risca, both admitted murdering Stephen Lambert on August 27 last year.

Cardiff Crown Court heard yesterday that the trio had been drinking together and listening to music at Mr Lambert’s flat in Twmbarlwm Close.

Mr Lambert - known as Lammy - had fallen out with the half-brothers and asked them to leave.

The court heard the pair grabbed kitchen knives and stabbed the 36-year-old five times. He later died at Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

Prosecutor Peter Rouch QC said: "This was an attack by two men on one man.

"At the time Stephen Lambert was unarmed and defenceless. As he was being attacked by both men he was sitting down on the sofa.

"Ball was over him repeatedly ramming down with the knife. Mr Lambert was screaming at him to ‘stop it’.

"Ball stabbed Mr Lambert in the chest and Harris grabbed a knife and both of them where stabbing at Lambert."

The attack was witnessed by his cousin Louise Whatley, who locked herself in the toilet and phoned 999.

Mr Rouch added: "The call was taped and it's a harrowing call "Mrs Whatley is screaming and crying and in the background Mr Lambert can be heard coughing and groaning.

"Police arrived at the flat and found Mr Lambert on the sofa thrashing round saying ‘I can't breathe’.

"Blood was bubbling from the chest wound, he and the sofa where saturated with blood."

Surgeons battled to save Mr Lambert but he died from his injuries.

The pair were arrested near the scene and were charged with murder under the joint enterprise law.

In a victim impact statement, Mrs Whatley said: “It was a horrific, horrendous attack, I've never been so scared in all my life.

"I was sickened by what I was seeing."
