UPDATE: 11.10am

Structural engineers from Caerphilly council are continuing to evaluate the extent of the damage caused to the buildings affected by the fire and what actions are needed to make the site safe.

The High Street will remain closed to traffic today to allow this work to be undertaken.

Although Newbridge Town Centre is closed to traffic, pedestrian access is possible and the town is still "very much open for business" the council said in a statement.

UPDATE: 6.47am

THE fire on Newbridge High Street yesterday has been ruled as accidental.

Around 36 firefighters were in attendance from Aberbargoed, Risca, New Inn, Abertillery, Caerphilly and Maindee.  Five shops were evacuated due to heavy smoke from the fire.

The St David’s shop has been affected by the fire as well as a coffee shop next door.

The fire service were called at 12.25pm yesterday and the street was closed for the emergency services.

A SWFRS spokesman said yesterday that there was a “small box of fireworks” that seemed to be going off in a flat above the shop, but they did not start the fire, they were just involved in the fire insofar as they went off as the fire ripped through the building.

High Street in Newbridge remains closed and bus services are being diverted today. For more information see Stagecoach.
