DRUG misusing offenders receiving treatment for addictions will today help launch an innovative online support project for Gwent.

The Gwent Drug Interventions Programme (DIP), which has supported nearly 2,000 people since 2006, and is backed by Police and Crime Commissioner Ian Johnston, is launching a website and Twitter account.

The move follows feedback from DIP clients about a lack of information online about where they could get personalised advice and support after leaving prison or following arrest.

The new mobile device-friendly site offers a range of essential advice and support for substance misusers coming into contact with the criminal justice system in Gwent.

The DIP also provides advice, information and support groups for offenders' friends and families, and the website will also cater for their needs.

Fifty-two year-old David Griffiths from Blackwood, has battled heroin addiction for 14 years. He believes the new website and social media site will be an additional vital source of information for substance misusing offenders.

“Taking heroin is the daftest thing I’ve ever done in my life and it’s had a devastating effect,” he said.

“The more people know about the help on offer, the better. This programme has helped me a great deal and I’ve had lots of support.

Mr Johnston said he funds and supports the DIP because he recognises the importance of helping offenders break the cycle of reoffending to help them rebuild their lives.

"These additional online resources will provide instant access to recovery and rehabilitation services, which are absolutely key to my aim of reducing crime in Gwent by tackling the underlying causes of offending,” he said.
