A SERIES of deliberate grass fires in Blackwood has led to a police appeal for information.

Over the last three weeks Gwent Police has received five reports of grass fires, three in fields along Highfields Way and two behind Pencoed Avenue in Cefn Fforest.

Officers have been working alongside South Wales Fire and Rescue Service as part of an ongoing campaign to combat the problem.

Chief Inspector Nick McLain said: "Setting deliberate grass fires is an extremely reckless and dangerous activity, the consequences of which can be far-reaching for the environment, wildlife and local communities.

"Grass fires divert essential emergency services away from those who are vulnerable and in need, and a partnership approach is the only way to tackle offenders."

Gwent Police have asked residents to keep an eye out for suspicious activity in their neighbourhood and report any concerns.

CI McLain added: "Setting grass fires is a criminal offence and anyone found to be doing so will be dealt with robustly."
