CAERPHILLY MP Wayne David has apologised for using the term "coloured skin" when discussing immigration during a live radio broadcast.

Mr David was addressing a question about immigration in Caerphilly, when he made the remark that the only people with "coloured skin" in the town are the ones who run takeaways.

The MP has apologised for the comment, making a call for people in the UK to come together to fight racism.

During a BBC radio broadcast yesterday (Thursday, June 30) Mr David was asked by presenter Jamie Owen: “In terms of hard figures, how much of an issue is immigration in Caerphilly?”

Mr David replied: “Well, in terms of numbers it’s not an issue. I mean, I think the only people who have coloured skin, if you like, are people who run takeaways."

After he received several complaints about the remark, Mr David apologised online.

Mr David said: “I apologise for any offence made and of course fully acknowledge the important role and huge contribution that all ethnicities play in our society."

He added that he had been shocked by the UK wide rise in racially motivated hate crime in the wake of the UK's decision to leave the EU last week.

“I think it’s extremely important that we all work together to fight racism," he said. "Everyone has a responsibility to ensure that there is respect and a common togetherness in the country.

"We pride ourselves on being multicultural and the recent racism we have seen is unacceptable.”
