SCHOOL children at Abercarn Primary School in Caerphilly launched the school's very own radio station on Thursday.

Called “Abercarn On Air”, the pupil-run station began life with some exclusive interviews and appearances whilst raising money for Global’s Make Some Noise – a charity supporting disadvantaged youngsters across the UK.

DJ Woody and Jagger from Heart South Wales’ radio station Breakfast Show attended the launch and were interviewed by two Year 6 presenters with the producer looking after them for the duration of the visit.

Head teacher Gareth Roden said: “I’m delighted with how the launch has gone and am extremely proud of pupils’ dedication and effort over the past term since we had the equipment installed. The station promotes a range of literacy and numeracy skills, develops confidence, teamwork, empowerment and inclusion.

“I am in no doubt that the studio will go a long way to develop pupils’ confidence and reinforce many of the key literacy and numeracy skills across the curriculum.”

For the launch day, the whole school dressed ‘loud’ as part of the fundraising collection.

During the visit DJ's Woody and Jagger invited pupils to visit their studio in Cardiff Bay to find out what their Breakfast Show broadcast is like and Mr Roden stated that the pupils ‘can’t wait to visit although they are not looking forward to the 6am start’.

Although a date isn’t finalised, a future visit would give the children a chance to be able to pick up some hints, tips and skills.

The radio studio was installed over the summer holidays and from the beginning of September, pupils have been busy learning how to use the equipment and perfecting their presenting skills. Radio shows are broadcast throughout the school and are available online via the school website for anyone to listen.

So far nearly 40 pupils have been trained from Year 3 to Year 6 and live broadcasts take place throughout the day at breakfast club at 8.30am, break times, lunchtimes and at the end of the day for waiting parents.

The school council have also been busy recording numeracy competition broadcasts linked to the School Development Plan for 2016 to 2017.
