A CHOIR will be celebrating 65 years by singing for the speaker of the House of Commons.

Cefn Hengoed Ladies' Choir have been invited to sing by the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow at his State Rooms in the Speaker's House in Westminster on Wednesday October 31.

MP for Caerphilly Wayne David will be inviting a number of Welsh MPs and peers to the event. The choir has also been offered a tour of the Palace of Westminster.

One of the longest running choirs in South Wales, and a founder member of the Welsh Association of Ladies Choirs, Cefn Hengoed Ladies Choir was formed in 1947 by the then Headmaster of Derwendeg Primary School, Iestyn Evans and the Village Ladies Club. This community choir attracts members from Bargoed to Blackwood and Aberdare to Abergavenny, with a current age range of 15 - 89 years.

The 65th Anniversary Concert will take place on Saturday September 29 at Lewis Girls' School, Ystrad Mynach when songs from a very varied repertoire will be sung along with a version of Vivaldi's 'Gloria' for female voices.

It will be the first time in the choir's history that they will have sung with an orchestra.
