Calling all nations in Caerphilly borough to join the parade
1:50pm Tuesday 3rd July 2012 in Campaign news
THE Campaign and Caerphilly borough council are teaming up to find the different nationalities who live in the borough, to hold an Olympic parade at the Big Cheese.
The opening night of this year's Big Cheese Weekend, Friday July 27 is on the same night as the opening ceremony for the London Olympics.
The CCBC Mayor, Cllr Gaynor Oliver, is calling on residents to join together in a mass 'Parade of Nations' onto the Big Cheese site starting from the Twyn Community Centre.
Cllr Oliver said: "We know there are people from over a hundred different nationalities residing in the county borough and to mark the opening of the London 2012 Olympics we want to create our own 'Parade of Nations' with everyone wearing their country's colours or costumes and waving flags."
Once on site, there will be a giant TV Screen broadcasting the opening ceremony live from London with interactive cameras to capture Caerphilly's own Olympic Moment to Shine.
Cllr Oliver said: "After the overwhelming response to the Olympic Torch Relay, where local people turned out in their thousands to join the celebrations, we are hoping that residents will come along and support us again in the same style. The parade will start at 6.30 pm and arrive on the Big Cheese site around 7 pm.
Following the parade the evening will end with a spectacular firework display at 10.15pm.
