A PUB run by a former Newport councillor will be able to hold two events to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee this weekend despite objections from council officials that they would disturb residents.

Newport Council Environmental Health had objected to temporary event notices for the Red Lion run by Angela Jones in Backhall Street, Caerleon, Newport for a live band on Saturday and a party on Monday in the pub's beer garden.

But Newport Council licensing sub-committee granted a temporary event notice for the first event at a meeting this week, while an objection to the other event was dropped.

She told the meeting the Saturday application, made for live entertainment at the pub from 7.30pm to 10.45pm, was for a live band while the pub wanted to re-enact a street party for children in the pub's back garden.

Robert Davies, from Newport Council environmental health, said the department objected as the event would cause a nuisance to residents.

He played a tape of music, recorded from a bedroom in a complainant's property, played at an event held last year at the Red LionBut Mr Davies told the meeting that he was aware of only one complaint.

Councillor Allan Morris, chairman of the sub-committee, said the committee was happy to grant the licence for the event.

He said: "The rest of the country will be celebrating this one-off event, we think it will be unreasonable to turn it down."

Environmental health objection to the second event was withdrawn allowing the notice to be granted, after it emerged that music at the party would be played from a stereo and not live.

Angela Jones, former Caerleon councillor and licensee, said she was pleased with the decision.

She said: "We're putting on a community event to celebrate the Jubilee. The regulars expect us to put on some celebration. It's purely aimed at regulars."
