Knitting for charity

A SCHOOL in Trethomas has knitted more than 200 chickens to help raise money for charity.

Pupils at Tyn y Wern Primary School have been knitting for weeks for Velindre Hospital's Chick Knit Appeal.

Teacher, Linda Bignell said: "The children from all over the school have taken part in knitting.

"We have about 200 chickens which we donated to Velindre."

Sandra Keane from the hospital picked up the knitted toys for the charity. A former patient at Velindre Cancer Centre, Julie Smith, created the Chick Knit Appeal back in 1996 during treatment for her second cancer. She was so grateful for the wonderful way that she was treated, she wanted to give something back to the hospital and take her mind off the difficult months ahead of her, and the chick knit was born.

The pattern was created by one of the volunteers at the hospital gift shop, Joyce Davies, many keen knitter knitted a staggering 250,000 chicks raising £250,000 from the sale of the chicks. Julie was awarded the MBE from the Queen because of the success of that appeal. Julie said: "It was wonderful to receive the award because I felt that it was an honour to the hundreds of people that helped make the Chick Knit Appeal a success, because without their help it would never have been possible."

This year, Velindre re-launched the appeal and hope to make it bigger and better than ever before.
