Top award for scheme

AN INITIATIVE helping young people leaving care has won a top award for Caerphilly borough council.

The Leaving Care Team project won in the Being a Learning Organisation' category and is run by Caerphilly County Borough Council. The project is giving young people leaving care a say in the future of care services.

The project won at the Social Care Accolades where the award was presented by the Deputy Minister for Social Services, Gwenda Thomas AM, at a gala ceremony in Cardiff City Hall.

The team initiative was praised by the judges for enabling young people leaving the care system in Caerphilly to become involved in every aspect of developing the future of care services in the borough.

According to the judges, the entry stood out for the way it drew on the knowledge and expertise of those leaving care to improve the experience for others.

Jane Moore, of Caerphilly County Borough Council said: "We all feel very proud of the Leaving Care Team and especially the young people involved in helping develop the services. Winning the Accolade is recognition of all the hard work that has gone into the project over the years."

The project will now work with the Care Council to demonstrate and share best practice within the care sector in workshops to be held in north and south Wales in the autumn. Other organisations will learn from the experiences and successes of the winning projects.

The Social Care Accolades, organised by the Care Council for Wales in partnership with others, aim to recognise and publicly reward teams, partnerships and organisations, which have helped transform social care services in their area by investing in the learning and development of their people.
