Risca man arrested for attempted murder

A RISCA man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at the weekend after a woman was hit by a van.

The ambulance service called police to the house on Navigation Road at 6.20pm on Saturday after finding a 33-year-old woman there with serious injuries.

Police said the injuries were sustained as a result of a van hitting her on the driveway of the property.

The woman is currently in a critical but stable condition at the Royal Gwent hospital.

A 55-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in custody.

House-to-house enquiries and forensic examinations of the house have been conducted and police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident.

Neighbours of the house spoke of their shock yesterday.

One said: “I left the house for a short while at about 7pm on Saturday and could see the top of the drive of the house was cordoned off.

“There were lots of police officers, some forensic scientists and about three or four police cars on the street. They were still there when I went to bed at about 1am.”

“No-one seems to know much about what has gone on but we were all just really surprised to see the amount of police there.”

Another neighbour said: “The police were at the house all evening and there was even a police helicopter.

“It looked like they were carrying out forensic examinations on the driveway so I think there had been some kind of accident on the drive.”

Any witnesses are asked to contact Gwent Police on 01633 838111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
