Students set to 'March on Melanoma'

A GROUP of students has decided to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support by walking from their college to Blackwood after their lecturer was diagnosed with skin cancer.

Students at the College Ystrad Mynach wanted to show their support for History lecturer, Jane Gustard who was diagnosed with Melanoma.

Mum-of-one, Jane said: "I was diagnosed with cancer in my neck and had it removed. I have been given the all clear on that but I am waiting on my foot.

"I hope the fundraiser helps to raise awareness of skin cancer among the students."

The organisers, students at the college will be doing this as part of the Enrichment course taught by Jane, which helps them to get involved with the community.

Main organisers Luke Spatts, Charlotte Pritchard, Emilyjade Hughes and Josh Jones decided to do a sponsored walk from the college to Blackwood. They are expecting around 100 walkers including students and lecturers to take part in the walk on Wednesday March 24.

They have come up with the name March on Melanoma and Jane's husband has designed a special logo of a figure in a baseball cap walking. The walkers will also wear a black ribbon, which is the ribbon of Melanoma.

Student at The College Ystrad Mynach and one of the organisers, Luke Spatts said: " We all decided to raise the money for MacMillan when we heard about Jane's diagnosis. Many of us have been affected by cancer in some way or other in our lives so we thought it would be a good cause to raise money for.

"I have been involved with fundraising before and was involved in the raising money for the Joshua Foundation (a foundation set up after the death of Joshua of cancer) as I was in Joshua's class in school.

"We will be organising the whole event including talking to Gwent Police about the walk which will include getting across the dual carriageway to Maesycwmer."
