A SCHOOL have scooped a £10,000 windfall for their outdoor classrooms.
Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills, Jane Hutt AM, visited the first exemplar project being run by a new charity, Learning through Landscapes Cymru (LTL Cymru), which is aiming to ensure that every child in Wales has the opportunity to benefit from a 'classroom outdoors'.
Cwmaber Juniors in Abertridwr, Caerphilly is the first of what LTL hopes will be many inspirational projects.
The lucky school recently learned that they have won £10,000 in a national 'Dream Playgrounds' competition supported by NatWest, part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group.
Head Teacher, Dyfed Davies, said: "Winning this competition will be a massive step forward in terms of level of provision at Cwmaber. These are lovely children and they deserve so much better than what they currently have. Dream Playgrounds will enable everyone to help create a playground to be proud of."
The whole school community will be involved in the creation of the playground. On her visit, the Minister will be joining in with a pupil consultation to hear first hand about what sorts of experiences pupils want outside.

Jon Fox, Regional Managing Director for NatWest said: "The quality of schools grounds are important to pupils and teachers as they can help improve social development and raise educational attainment. Schools often struggle to find the money to make improvements, particularly within deprived communities, so this funding will certainly help make a difference to Cwmaber Primary School."
Education Minister Jane Hutt said: "Encouraging children to be active and healthy through play is something the Assembly Government fully supports. Play is an essential part of every child's development - as well as the physical benefits it brings, it also helps children develop both socially and emotionally.
This is the first of many LTL projects in Wales that will make the most of the outdoors. From what I have seen I am sure the pupils of Cwmaber Primary School will have many hours of fun in the new ways to engage and inspire all children, particularly those who find traditional indoor settings more difficult."
