THOUGH he omitted to mention which council he had in mind, nationalist Mr Nutt criticises the Caerphilly Labour group for “watering down” a Plaid Cymru motion about the Con-Dem government’s “bedroom tax” (Argus, August 15).
He says that nationalists wanted “to introduce a series of measures to protect tenant[s], which include[d] a promise not to evict people because of ‘Bedroom Tax’ arrears”.
What Mr Nutt failed to mention was that council officers had questioned the legality of Plaid’s proposals – and that Plaid councillors had no answer to these concerns. And he failed to admit that our Labour-led council has commissioned work to identify how best to protect tenants from the effects of the bedroom tax; or that our council has been working for months supporting tenants affected by this iniquitous levy, and has already contacted over 800 tenants to help them.
The Caerphilly Labour group of councillors unanimously opposes the bedroom tax, and our Labour-led council is committed to working with tenants to protect their interests. It’s a shame Mr Nutt tries to score cheap political points instead of working with our council and tenants to fight the Con-Dem Westminster government’s attacks on local working people.
