Interior designers give Shirley Allan some
tips of the trade
MANY people find it difficult to visualise their new home interior. They do not know where to start, are unsure whether colours and fabrics will match, how existing furniture will fit in with new materials or what is the best way to measure a window for curtains.
Glasgow's interior design retailer, Decorum has a highly successful department which specialises in the creation of showhomes for Scotland's house builders and its designers. They are offering the public an opportunity to learn some of the tricks of the trade. For this purpose they are organising a workshop, The World of Successful Interior Design. It consists of four evenings during which participants are taken step by step through the process of interior design.
Graham Crawford, managing director at Decorum explained: ''We want to help people to create beautiful and comfortable homes. To assist our customers, we offer a free interior design service, including at no extra cost a consultation at your new home by a professional interior designer.
''We have also found that after a project is completed, we are asked about the secrets of a successful design. In general, customers want to get more involved and learn about designing. that is why we decided to organise the workshop.''
During the workshops participants have an opportunity to learn how to design a room in their new home, an existing apartment, a friend's home or just the room of their dreams.
The Decorum designers will supply hands-on support and offer advice on matters such as:
What will help you to choose a carpet.
How style and wearability of sofas influences your home.
What to look for when you select colours for wallcoverings.
Ways to hang your curtains.
How to determine the quality of lighting.
Finding an accessory that complements a successful interior.
The workshop is conducted by Mr Gerry Burke senior design consultant at Decorum and there will be guest speakers on specialist subjects.
They will show you how to work as a professional designer, including the planning, conception and styling of an interior, the purposes of swatches, how to use a sketch book and to pull it all together. Participants will be able to take away the results of their work and examine these in their home. Decorum supplies all designer tools, swatches and samples. The cost of this four-week course is #50.
In addition to the four-week course, Decorum's designers are involved in a series of one-day workshops, presentations and talks on the work of an interior designer.
