ONE Devonshire Gardens has been named the best hotel in the UK in the coveted Conde Nast Johansens' awards.

The five-star hotel in the heart of Glasgow's west end was the only one in Scotland to make the three-strong shortlist, with the Hotel Du Vin in Birmingham and the Hotel Felix in Cambridgeshire.

The annual Most Excellent UK City Hotel of the Year award is based on finest standards and best value for money in luxury, with guest survey reports an important part of the judging process.

The honour underlines One Devonshire's renaissance since its takeover two years ago by Citrus Hotels, headed by two English millionaires who vowed to return the venue to its roots as a luxury hostelry popular with the rich and famous.

A (pounds) 2m refurbishment followed after the hotel's former owner, a timeshare company, collapsed with debts of (pounds) 22m.

Stephen McCorkell, general manager, said the award was ''widely regarded as a benchmark of excellence in our industry, and was a testament to the hard work of our staff''.

Scott Taylor, chief executive of Greater Glasgow and Clyde Valley Tourist Board, said: ''We are delighted One Devonshire Gardens has been recognised in such a prestigious scheme, and against such fierce competition in the UK.

''It continues to set the quality mark for excellence in the hotel industry. It truly is Scotland with style.''
