PASSENGERS at Glasgow airport yesterday claimed they were involved in a ''near-miss'' with another aircraft.

The incident took place at about 5.45pm and involved a British Midland flight arriving at Glasgow from Heathrow.

Susan Swarbrick, a journalist from Glasgow, said the aircraft, flight BD 008, was only 150 to 200ft off the ground when it suddenly aborted its landing.

''I fly regularly but got quite a fright, as did the rest of the passengers. I've never experienced that before,'' she said.

''The pilot announced it was because a light aircraft was landing in the opposite direction without permission.''

However, a spokesman for National Air Traffic Services, said: ''The plane was in its final approach and a Cessna 310 in front was slow to clear the runway, so the pilot decided to go round again.

''It is a fairly routine procedure.''
