June 10.

In the aftermath of his ill-thought-out, hasty Cabinet reshuffle and

Norman Lamont's scathing attack (June 9), where does John Major go from

here?

Since 1990 he has gone from one disaster to another. In 1992 he won

his own mandate to govern, not because of his policies or style of

government, but thanks to the huge majority he inherited.

The fragility of the Conservative Party is all too apparent; one

minute best friends, the next sworn enemies. Is it not time the 1922

Committee swallowed its pride, admitted its folly, and went cap in hand

to Lady Thatcher and asked her to carry the torch once more?
