Confused of Glasgow seeks tactical advice Am I the only reader who was completely perplexed by Richard Winton's article "Is there still a place for old-fashioned strikers?" (Sport, June 11)?
Visceral, perfunctory, apocryphal, phalanx. No, I don't know what they mean either. Later in the article he informs us: "With the ubiquity of the 4-5-1 necessitating cosmetic attention, this development . . . seems likely to become the next system to capture the tactical Zeitgeist". What?
The beauty of football and the explanation for its massive popularity lies purely in the game's simplicity. Fans like goals. They mostly don't care how their team goes about scoring them, so long as the other side score less. And all this without the aid of a thesaurus.
One final question, can anyone explain what a "double pivot midfield" is?
Stephen Downey, Glasgow Strange recruitment two points on proposed Celtic signings this summer: n If, as reported, they are trying to sign every player Rangers are showing interest in then we will finish in the bottom six of the league next season. Most of the names mentioned are not Celtic class.
n Some of my peers continue to state we need a "blue chip" signing. I disagree. Think back to Juninho, Thomas Gravesen and even Roy Keane. I would much rather have a player such as Scott McDonald, as he is quite literally over the moon to be at Celtic Park.
He will give us his all, as will young Scott Brown. These guys are the future for Celtic, not a has-been with an over-inflated ego and price tag.
Robert McGonigle, Bearsden Changed days Last week you printed a lavish report on the Junior Cup Final by one of your top reporters. Then just five days later you didn't even give out details of Saturday's Junior fixtures, which I sought eagerly through the section.
I had to resort to a sly glance through the Super Soaraway' in the newsagent to find out who was where. How quickly we forget!
Also, the photograph of Hugh Gourley in Sunday's piece about the Glasgow cup final (Archive, June 11) must have been taken many years after Cambuslang's victory in the initial final, as he looks anything like a minor?

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
