Wales wing Harries has to make way for returning flyer Evans

DROPPED: Winger Will Harries is not in the squad for Glasgow
NEWPORT Gwent Dragons have dropped Wales wing Will Harries for Friday’s RaboDirect Pro12 trip to high-flying Glasgow.
The 25-year-old, who has played in eight of the region’s nine fixtures, is a victim of the return of full-back Dan Evans after a two-week layoff because of a thumb injury.
He will play with a protective strapping on his left hand against the third-placed Warriors and his return will enable Tom Prydie, who is the Dragons’ goalkicker, to move back to the wing.
While Harries has not been in his most dazzling form, it would be harsh to suggest that a winger is at the root of the problem for the misfiring Dragons.
The three-times capped speedster hasn’t scored since crossing against Zebre on opening day but that is because he has been living off scraps.
Nonetheless, he will stay at home while his teammates fly to Scotland with director of rugby Robert Beale believing he has suffered because of others’ versatility.
“Will is not injured – it’s a straight forward selection issue,” he said.
“He has been slightly under par and misses out because of the return of Dan Evans at 15.
“We have chosen to go with Tonderai Chavhanga, Tom Prydie – with his valuable asset of goalkicking – and young Hallam Amos in the squad.
“In fact, we wanted to include Hallam last week against Ulster but couldn’t because of his national academy commitments, which was hugely disappointing.
“When you look at the make-up of the backs travelling to Glasgow there are several that can play in more than one position.
“To be fair to Will, he was pressed into playing full-back last season but he is an out and out right wing.”
Centre Andy Tuilagi also drops out of the squad. The Samoan scored against Ulster last week and carried powerfully but was exposed a number of times in defence.
The Dragons will be refereed by Italian official Marius Mitrea for the third time on their travels this season.
The region lost both the encounters that he took charge of – Leinster and Munster – and they will need to stay in his good books if they are to avoid a repeat of last season’s corresponding fixture.
Glasgow fly-half Duncan Weir rewrote the record books by knocking eight penalties from eight as the Warriors triumphed 24-19.
“It’s hugely important that we are squeaky clean because most teams in this league have kickers with very good percentages that rarely miss,” said Beale.
“Give penalties away in their range and they will put them over and we cannot afford to gift points to a very good Glasgow side.
“I don’t know how they will be affected by Scotland calls but they will be a tough nut to crack regardless of what squad they put out.
“Glasgow have become a formidable side and are performing very well at the moment.”
The Dragons are without centre Adam Hughes (hip), prop Owen Evans (shoulder) and hooker Sam Parry (shoulder).
Centre Jack Dixon and flanker Ieuan Jones are included after being at a Wales Under-20s skills camp with Amos last weekend.
Dragons squad: D Evans, T Prydie, T Chavhanga, H Amos, J Dixon, A Smith, P Leach, L Robling, Steffan Jones, J Evans, L Davies, P Price, N Williams, Steve Jones, H Gustafson, N Buck, D Way, T Ryan, R Sidoli, A Jones, I Nimmo, J Groves, T Brown, L Evans, I Jones, N Cudd.

True that, but none of them can play anywhere without the ball.

And so what if Will has played all bar one so far, it's only October!! If a professional rugby player needs a rest so early in the season then we will really be in trouble when we get past Christmas. Also any fan who pays to support their club has the right to criticise. No different if I bought a tv and it was rubbish, I'd have the right to say its rubbish and doesn't do what I expect. This team is underachieving, we have quality backs and two thirds (when fit) of the possible British lions back row. We have gone backwards for past 2 seasons not forward and if as fans we say nothing, twiddle our thumbs and say never mind chaps there's always the next game, our region will go under and that is something I don't want to see.
Welshman76, you don't know much about it by the sound of it. Will Harries has played all the games this season bar one and everyone needs a rest some time. Anyway everyone is writing the Dragons off as no hopers so why not change the team around and give someone else a game, it would silence a few if they did pull off the win, but then they would moan about something else.

Think the headline is very unfair on Harries...he is not the only one to be left out/dropped. Jonah Lomu would not be scoring tries in this team...wingers rarely score tries if they do not get the ball! We might as well not play any wingers for all the ball they get!
More worryingly is the fact that apart from endeavour and bustle we seem to lack any coherent game plan we really do look clueless at times and that is not solely down to the players!

Doberman1....I wonder what player you have been watching! Tuilagi does and has give crash ball options BUT both he and Hughes do not/can not pass the ball! In Tuilagi we must also have the ONLY South Sea Islander who does not/ can not tackle! Did you see how many tackles he missed against Ulster?

I wish we had this selection problem for the front five.
I have mentioned sveeral time already this season and at the end of last that we don't have a game plan. We react to the opposition and try to spoil possession and live off scraps.

phantom14 wrote:Agreed phantom14...Tuilagi is.a very selfish player he is very much in the same mould as Leach the sooner they get the Smith Hughes partnership back together the better , they are both great passers of the ball and have great vision and with the pack improving game on game there will be plenty of opportunities in games to come. Last season we weren't smashing through the middle like we do now. It was more open expansive Rugby encouraged by DE and the sooner we get back to that the better it's to prescribed at the mo and easy to defend against !
Have not seen the ball go past Tuilagi once yet, does not offload or pass, so no chance for any outside, the gameplan i guess is to re cycle off crash ball but we always **** up or give away a penalty, sums up the season so far.Convert Tuilagi to prop and play Ahsley at 12.
