Big time beckoning for Craig Evans

BLACKWOOD’S Craig Evans is confident of making it eight wins from eight professional bouts when he takes on Nigerian Ideh Ockuko tonight.
The 23-year-old is one of the brightest young prospects in promoter Frank Warren’s stable of boxers.
He faces Ockuko over six rounds on the undercard of Junior Witter’s defence of his British welterweight belt against Frankie Gavin at London’s York Hall.
But Evans insists it won’t be long before he is the one challenging for titles after a blistering start to his career.
Ever since knocking out Dan Carr inside 39 seconds on his pro debut at Upton Park in 2010, the Gwent youngster has been marked down as one to watch and he believes his time is coming.
“Ockuko is moving up in weight and he shouldn’t be too much of a problem for me,” he said.
“Hopefully my record will be 8-0 by Friday morning and then I can look to move on to bigger and better things.
“I’d like to keep busier because I haven’t fought since May,” he added.
“After doing a couple of eight-rounders I’ll be looking to move up to 10 rounds and before too long challenge for a Welsh or Celtic title. I think I’m close to that now.”
Evans had originally been set to feature on the Nathan Cleverly bill at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena last Saturday and he admits he was disappointed when Cleverly opted to fight in Los Angeles instead and the show was cancelled.
“I was gutted when I heard the show was off but I’m pleased Frank Warren has got me on this bill at short notice so my training wasn’t wasted,” he said.
“I’ve trained hard and I’m looking forward to getting in the ring again and getting another win on my record.
“Fighting at York Hall will be another great experience as well as it is an historic boxing venue and I want to add my name to the list of fighters who have fought and won there.”
