Bernard Martin Cup 1st round - Ystrad Stars 1 Nelson Cavaliers 4
Nelson went through to the second round with a stuttering performance against a plucky 10 man Ystrad Stars side.
The Cavs started well and took the lead with a well taken goal from Tom Woods. After missing another couple of chances they allowed Ystrad back into the game and they found an equaliser via a long throw which was flicked into the far corner.
Nelson retook the lead just before break with a great goal. A short corner from Kyle Spencer was worked back to Joel Davies on the edge of the box and he struck a great shot which curled into the top corner. 2-1 Half time.
Nelson settled and played better football in the second half but a lot of it was laboured which allowed the hard working hosts to close then down.
A brave substitution saw the introduction of Dan Falconer which inspired Nelson.
They wrapped the game up with a brace from top scorer Ben Banks, the first following some neat flowing football between Gareth Allison and Lewis Roberts which allowed Gareth time and space to produce a good cross which was well converted by Ben Banks. Then a clever corner from Lewis Roberts was expertly finished on the volley by Banks.
The Cavs progress but will have to raise their game in the next round.
