EBBW Vale could do Gwent neighbours Blackwood a huge favour by battering Bonymaen at home tomorrow afternoon as well as putting them a step closer to lifting the Swalec Championship trophy and promotion to the Principality Premiership.

The Steelmen could potentially go 24 points clear at the top of the table if they, as widely expected, secure all five points this weekend and Narberth get nothing from their home game with Llanharan.

Vale easily overcame Llanharan 36-10 away last Saturday but their bonus point win was tainted by a serious injury to their highly thought of flanker Gareth Williams.

The back rower has had an operation for a badly broken leg and is hoping to be at Eugene Cross Park as his side entertain struggling Bonymaen.

The Swansea side lifted themselves off the bottom of the table last week with a shock 7-5 home victory over RGC 1404 but their relief could be short lived when they face the all-conquering Steelmen.

Vale have secured 58 points out of a possible 60, chalking up 12 straight and convincing league victories out of 12 this season as they aim to return to the Premiership for the first time since they were relegated in 2010.

Bonymaen’s surprising victory over North Walians RGC 1404 and Blackwood’s 38-7 hammering at the hands of Tata Steel last Saturday means it is the Glan-yr-Afon side who are now propping up the table.

But Blackwood are given a great opportunity to move off the basement when they entertain fellow strugglers Beddau tomorrow.

Pontypool, in fifth place after last weekend’s 19-17 Gwent derby triumph away at Newbridge, will fancy themselves at home to Tata Steel.

They could move a couple of places up the Swalec Championship should they win and other results go their way in a much improved season for the Pontypool Park side after a disappointing time in the last campaign.

Newbridge fought back well last week to give Pooler a real scare in the closing stages and they will be keen for a victory at Tondu who are two from bottom with just three wins and nine defeats from their 12 encounters so far.

A triumph could also push the Welfare Ground side a few places up the league to a more respectable mid-table position.

Swalec Championship (kick-off 2.30pm): Blackwood v Beddau, Cardiff Met v Bridgend Athletic, Ebbw Vale v Bonymaen, Narberth v Llanharan, Pontypool v Tata Steel, RGC 1404 v Bargoed, Tondu v Newbridge.
