Newport RFC home cup tie moved to Newbridge

NEWPORT RFC’s ‘home’ Swalec Cup tie against Bonymaen on Saturday is being played at Newbridge RFC’s Welfare Ground.

The fixture falls on a day that has been allocated for Newport County to play at Rodney Parade.

Newport asked Swalec Championship side Bonymaen to play the fixture on Sunday, January 5 but they would not agree to this.

The Swansea team asked the Welsh Rugby Union for a ruling and the Black and Ambers have been told that if Bonymaen will not agree to play on the Sunday then the game has to be played on Saturday, January 4 and it is the responsibility of the home club to provide a venue.

A Newport spokesman said: “Following their lack of cooperation we are reluctant to switch the game to Bonymaen and give them ‘home advantage’ so we have looked for an alternative venue.

“Newbridge RFC has kindly agreed to allow Newport RFC to use their ground so the game will now be played at The Welfare Ground, Newbridge and will be at 2.30pm on Saturday. Newport RFC will provide free transport to this game.”

Tickets are now available, costing an adult £10 (£2 discount for season ticket holders if purchased before Saturday) and seniors and Under-16s £5 (no discount on this price).

To qualify for free transport, buy a ticket from the Newport ticket office before Saturday and ask for your name to be added to the list. Coaches leave Rodney Parade at 12.45pm and will leave Newbridge at 5pm.

Newport’s game with Cross Keys on Saturday was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
